Grapevine Canyon near Laughlin, Nevada
The Grapevine Canyon listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places is located on Spirit Mountain near Laughlin, Nevada. The rugged canyon lies around six miles from the Colorado River at an elevation of 2,395 feet. It is the largest petroglyph site in southern Nevada also known as Christmas Tree Pass. The glyphs in the Grapevine Canyon were created between 1100 and 1900 AD when it was being inhibited by Mojave and other tribes.
The Spirit Mountain located above the Grapevine Canyon is one of the most significant places for the Yuman tribes which comprises of Mohave, Hualapai, Yavapai, Havasupai, Quechan, Pai pai and Maricopa.
The mountain still remains sacred to these tribes and they continue to use the area according to their traditions. Visitors intending to take a tour of Grapevine Canyon are advised to respect the traditions of these people by being cautious and try not to deface the centuries old petroglyphs.
To get access to the Grapevine Canyon, visitors have to take the Christmas Tree Pass Road located off State Highway 163. Since water is scarce in the area it is advisable to the visitors to take plenty of water with them, keep the area free from litter and respect the holy area as well.
